Ibitipoca, Minas Gerais
A magical corner of Minas you’ll want to (re)visit
I can’t help but mention this truly special place in Minas Gerais — a must-stop destination for anyone traveling through the charming Zona da Mata region. Ibitipoca is one of those gems sculpted by nature with care: icy, crystal-clear waterfalls, massive rock formations, and a landscape that looks like it came straight out of a dream. It’s a piece of Minas that invites you to take a deep breath, disconnect from the world, and lose yourself among trails, hills, and endless horizons.
The first time I went to Ibitipoca was with a group of my brother’s friends — and with Pedro. At the time, he still lived in Brazil, and in one of those spontaneous bursts typical of people who live for the moment, we decided overnight to take this big trip to the Ibitipoca mountains. And wow… it was simply phenomenal! The day was beautiful, the weather perfect. We hiked all day long, exploring most of the park’s trails and waterfalls, surrounded by laughter, stories, and that comforting silence only nature can bring.
Some time later, I went back with a group of friends to the small, welcoming village next to the park. That night, we enjoyed a lively show by Armandinho, and the next day my girlfriend and I set out once again to explore the mountains — this time in winter. The scenery was completely different: a thick fog blanketed the park in the early morning hours, giving it a mysterious and magical atmosphere. But as soon as the sun came out, the sky would open into that deep blue you only see in a Minas winter.
Both trips left a special mark on me. Ibitipoca has that kind of magic — each visit feels unique, a new way to connect with nature and with yourself. It’s a destination worth experiencing more than once, because there’s no way to see it all in a single day.
And I can guarantee: you’ll want to go back.
