Brazilian roots

Leopoldina, Minas Gerais: Where It All Began

Pedro and I were both born and raised in Leopoldina, a relatively quiet town in the countryside of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It has never been the smallest in the region, but it was never the largest either. Even so, being born here feels like a true privilege.

Most of our family also comes from this same town. That alone strengthens the sense of belonging we carry and explains the deep affection we feel for the place.

As children, our memories were shaped by the simple rhythm of life in Leopoldina. We would play freely in the neighborhood streets, run until we were exhausted, and climb walls and trees without ever worrying about the time. Many nights were spent at our cousins’ houses, and every school break or summer afternoon became a chance to create new stories together.

Leopoldina was never dangerous, but it was never truly bustling either. In fact, it has always been that kind of middle ground — calm enough to feel safe, yet alive enough to keep things interesting. That balance is exactly what makes the town so unique.

Among all the places that mean something to us, one stands out: Morro do Cruzeiro. Despite its name, it is closer to a mountain than a hill, and it rises above the city’s rolling landscape. Up there, you’ll find radio antennas, substations, and even a small bar. Yet none of those things matter as much as the view, because the sunset from that spot is simply unforgettable.

From the top, you can enjoy an almost 360-degree view. The peak sits at about 400 meters high, while the town itself rests roughly 630 meters above sea level. The panorama includes neighboring towns in the distance, fields of cattle grazing peacefully, and the lush greenery typical of the region.

And then, of course, there is Leopoldina itself. At night, the city glows below like a necklace of tiny lights spread across the mountains. It is one of those scenes that stays in your memory long after you’ve left.

Yes, Leopoldina may be a quiet town. However, it carries an undeniable charm and a warm, authentic culture that makes it impossible to forget.

So, if you ever come to Brazil, let me know. I would be more than happy to welcome you and show you around. After all, Leopoldina is much more than just a dot on the map for us. It is, without a doubt, a piece of who we are.
